Procedure
7.4 g of (E)-3-(4-acetoxy-3-methoxy-5-propyl-1-naphthyl)-2-methylpropenoic acid was dissolved in 1.3 liters of acetone, and irradiated with light from a high pressure mercury lamp through a Pyrex filter at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and purified by silica gel column chromatography (3% methanol/chloroform) to obtain 2.7 g of the titled compound as colorless crystals.
