Procedure
1.9 g (50.2 mmole) of sodium borohydride were added to a solution of 1.75 g (5.2 mmole) of ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butanoate in 25 ml of methanol, and then the mixture was heated under reflux for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was allowed to cool, and it was then poured into ice-water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, dried and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, to afford 1.5 g (98%) of the title compound melting at 120°-135° C.
