Methyl (S)-3-benzyloxymethyloxy-2-methylpropionate (1.20 g; 5 mmole) was dissolved in methanol (12 ml), and a lN sodium hydroxide solution (5.5 ml) was added thereto with ice-cooling, followed by stirring at room temperature for overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (30 ml) and washed with ether (20 ml) two times. The aqueous layer was acidified with 6N hydrochloric acid with ice-cooling and extracted with ethyl acetate (30 ml) three times. The extracts were combined together, washed with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give (S)-3-benzyloxymethyloxy-2-methylpropionic acid.
