Reaction Steps

To a solution of 4-mercaptopyridine (222 mg; 2 Eq.) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 ml) keeping at 0° C. is added a solution of sodium methoxide in methanol (1.5 Eq.). To this mixture is added 7β-[2-(2-t-butoxycarbonylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-3-chloromethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid p-methoxybenzyl ester (2) (652 mg; 1 mMol.), and the mixture is stirred for 10 minutes. The reaction mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by silica gel chromatography (toluene:ethyl acetate) to give 7β-[2-(2-t-butoxycarbonylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-3-(4-pyridyl)thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid p-methoxybenzyl ester (3) (708 mg).
