Reaction Steps
To a solution of 4-mercaptopyridine (178 mg; 2 Eq.) in N,N-di-methylformamide (10 ml) at 0° C. are added a solution of sodium methoxide in methanol (1.5 Eq.) and then 7β-[2-(2-t-butoxycarbonylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-(1-diphenylmethoxycarbonyl-1-methylethoxyimino)acetamido]-3-chloromethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid p-methoxybenzyl ester (2) (712 mg; 0.8 mMol.), and the mixture is stirred for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by silica gel chromatography (toluene: ethyl acetate) to give 7β-[2-(2-t-butoxycarbonylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-(1-diphenylmethoxycarbonyl-1-methylethoxyimino)acetamido]-3-(4-pyridyl)thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid p-methoxybenzyl ester (3) (497 mg).
