Procedure

To a stirred solution of ethyl 2-(4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl)acetate (38.0 g, 106.741 mmol) in ethanol (200 mL) and water (100 mL) was added KOH (23.9 g, 426.964 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at RT for 4 h and after complete consumption of starting material as monitored by TLC, the reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 mL) and acidified using 1 N HCl at 0° C. The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (2×150 mL) and the combined organic extracts were washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and evaporated in vacuo to afford 2-(4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl)acetic acid (30.0 g, 95%) as a white solid.
