Diethyl N,N'-(oxydi-p-phenylene)dioxamate (2.0 gm.) is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours in 1.0 N sodium hydroxide (50 ml.). The solid is collected by filtration and dissolved in water. The pH is adjusted to pH=3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid and the desired product collected by filtration (1.6 gm., mp >320°). The ir spectrum is consistent with the assigned structure.
