Procedure
To a flask containing (2R)-5-iodo-6-nitro-1′-{[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxy]methyl}-1,3-dihydrospiro[indene-2,3′-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin]-2′(1′H)-one from Step B (4.02 g, 7.48 mmol), tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium (349 mg, 0.38 mmol), and 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenyl-1′-(di-tert-butylphosphino)ferrocene (532 mg, 0.75 mmol) was added 2-tert-butoxy-2-oxoethylzinc chloride (Rieke, 0.5 M in Et2O; 15.7 mL, 7.85 mmol) and the resulting solution was heated to 40° C. for 1 h. The reaction was quenched with dilute aqueous NaHCO3 (100 mL) and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (200 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of hexane:EtOAc—100:0 to 0:100, to give the title compound, which was of sufficient purity for use in the next step. MS: m/z=526 (M+1).
