To stirred concentrated sulfuric acid (25 mL) at 0° C. was added (±)-(2E)-3-ethoxy-N-(2′-oxo-1,1′,2′,3-tetrahydrospiro[indene-2,3′-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin]-5-yl)acrylamide from Step A (2.20 g, 6.30 mmol) portionwise. The resulting mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 10 min then poured onto ice and adjusted to pH=9 by careful addition of 10 N aqueous NaOH. The precipitate was isolated by filtration, washed with H2O, and dried to give the title compound. MS: m/z=304 (M+1).
