To a solution of Nα -[3-(acetylthio)-2-(methoxycarbonylmethyl)propanoyl]-L-arginine (1.9 g.) in methanol (10 ml.), sodium methoxide (0.56 g.) is added. After ten minutes, the solution is applied to a column of Dowex 50 resin and the column is washed with water until no more acidic material is eluted. Nα -[3-mercapto-2-(methoxycarbonylmethyl)propanoyl]-L-arginine is then eluted with a pyridine-acetate buffer of pH 6.5.
