Procedure
500 g (1 molar equivalent) of metformin hydrochloride and 120.76 g (1 molar equivalent) of sodium hydroxide were stirred in 3750 ml of methanol at room temperature, the produced inorganic salt was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated. The produced crystal was stirred in 5000 ml of acetone at 40° C., the produced inorganic salt was filtrated, and the filtrate was concentrated. The produced crystal was stirred in 4000 ml of acetone at 40° C., the produced inorganic salt was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated, thus obtaining 233.3 g (yield: 59.84%) of metformin free-base.
