Phosphorus tribromide (1.3 mL) and anhydrous CH2Cl2 (50 mL) were combined and then cooled over ice water for 20 minutes. The cooled solution was then added to a mixture of 1-(2-chloro-3,6-difluorophenyl)ethanol (2.71 g) and methylene chloride (50 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for two (2) hours. The mixture was then poured into H2O and extracted into CH2Cl2. The organic phase was isolated, dried with magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to give the title compound (78% yield).
