7,8-Dihydroxychromone-3-carboxylic acid (6.6 g) together with thionyl chloride (25 ml) were refluxed for one hour. Certain unreacted thionyl chloride remained in the reaction mixture was distilled off, and after addition of benzene to the residue, the mixture was again subjected to distillation. To the residue was added n-hexane to cause solidification of the residue. The solid matter thus formed was recovered by filtration. There was thus obtained the desired product (7.2 g).
