17.1 g (0.1 mol) of 2-cyanomethyl-5-methylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazole are intially introduced into 75 ml of glacial acetic acid. A solution of 7.8 g (0.11 mol) of NaNO2 in 20 ml of water is added dropwise and the mixture is stirred for 1 hour. 200 ml of water are then added to the solution and the mixture is filtered. The residue is washed with water: 19 g (95% of theory) of end product, melting point >200° C. (decomposition).
