Procedure
Into 40 ml methanol saturated with gaseous ammonia was dissolved 1.69 g (5 mmoles) of ethyl8-benzyloxycarbonylamino-3-hydroxyoctanoate. The solution was stirred for 3 days at room temperature, and the reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness. The residue was crystallized from ethanol to yield 1.18 g (72.5% yield) of 8-benzyloxycarbonylamino-3-hydroxyoctanamide having a melting point of 100°-101° C.
