Procedure

A melamine-formaldehyde based porous polymer was prepared by a two step method similar to Example 5. Melamine (63 g; 0.5 mol) was added to neutralised (pH 7-7.5) formalin (40% aq; 113 g; 1.5 mol). Ammonia solution (0.880; 1.3 ml) was added and the mixture stirred and heated to boiling. The resulting homogeneous solution was refluxed for 40 minutes, then concentrated under reduced pressure to give a clear, viscous syrup (70% solids). An aliquot of this syrup (12.2 g) was diluted with glycerol (2.3 g) and Miranol C2M-SF.CONC (1.5 g). Heptane (100 ml) was stirred in slowly to form a high internal phase emulsion. Phosphoric acid (50% aq; 1.0 g) was mixed in and the catalyzed emulsion heated at 70° C. for an hour.
