Methanesulphonyl chloride (15 ml.) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 2,2-dimethyl-5-ethyl-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane 1 (33.0 g) in dry pyridine (100 ml.) at 0°. The mixture was stirred for two hours at room temperature and then poured into water. The aqueous mixture was extracted with ether. The ethereal extracts were washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate and evaporated in vacuo. 2,2-Dimethyl-5-ethyl-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane methane sulphonate was obtained as a colourless oil (39 g.) which solidified on standing. The compound was used without further purification.
