A solution of 6-cyano-3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxy-N-methyl-N-(4-methoxy-benzyl)-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-4-acetamide (0.5 g) in methanesulpnonic acid (5 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 6 days. Water was added, and the mixture extracted into ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with sodium bicarbonate solution, brine, then dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated. Tne crude product was chromatographed (Si gel, ethyl acetate - pentane gradient elution) to give the title compound, which recrystallised from ethyl acetate as a colourless solid (40 mg) having m.pt. 141°-2° C.
