A mixture of 4-(2-cyanoiminoimidazolidin-1-yl)-2,2 -dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-6-carbonitrile (0.59 g) and acetic anhydride (0.94 ml) in pyridine (5.9 ml) was stirred at 100° C. for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with 5% hydrochloric acid and brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give 4-(3-acetyl-2-cyanoiminoimidazolidin-1-yl)-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-6-carbonitrile (0.41 g).
