A suspension of (E)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-but-3-en-2-one (615 mg, 3.5 mmol) in EtOH (10 mL) was stirred for 5 min at 0° C. A solution of K2CO3 (965 mg, 7.0 mmol) in H2O (5 mL) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred for further 10 min at 0° C. After the dropwise addition of 4-(trifluoromethoxy)-benzaldehyde (528 μl, 3.7 mmol), the pale yellow suspension was stirred for further 4 h at 0° C. The resulting yellow precipitate was filtered and dried in vacuo to obtain NW350 as a pale yellow solid (145 mg, 12%). mp: 105-107° C.
