A mixture of 4-chloro-6-(chloromethyl)-1,3-benzodioxole (30.0 g, 0.147 mol) and NaCN (7.94 g, 0.162 mol) in DMSO (80 mL) was stirred at 40° C. for 1 h and was then poured into water. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×130 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound (14.2 g; 50%).
