A mixture of 2-methyl-3-phenoxy-benzoic acid ethyl ester (5.23 g, 0.02 mol), N-bromosuccinimide (3.82 g, 0.02 mol) and benzoyl peroxide (247.5 mg, 1.1 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (80 mL) was refluxed for 4 h before it was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, and brine before it was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a yellow oil (7.08 g): 1H NMR (CDCl3, 200 MHz): δ=7.66 (m, 1H), 7.24 (m, 3H), 7.03 (m, 1H), 6.98 (m, 3H), 5.09 (s, 3H), 4.42 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.44 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
