A mixture of 8-(4-fluoro-phenoxy)-4-hydroxy-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (1.21 g, 3.87 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (723 mg, 4.06 mmol) and benzoyl peroxide (47 mg, 0.19 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (20 mL) was refluxed for 4 h before it was cooled to room temperature and partitioned between dichloromethane and water. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, brine, and was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel with a gradient of dichloromethane and hexane to give the title compound as a pale yellow solid (843 mg): MS: (+) m/z 392.00, 393.93 (M+1, 79Br/81Br).
