(3R,5S)-tert-Butyl 3,5-dimethylpiperazine-1-carboxylate (1.50 g, 7.00 mmol) was dissolved in 70 mL of methanol. To this was added 37% aqueous formaldehyde (1.17 mL, 14.0 mmol) and formic acid (1.14 mL, 24.5 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 70° C. for 24 hours, then concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting oil was taken up in EtOAc, washed with 10% aqueous potassium carbonate, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give 1.17 g (73%) of the title compound.
