Procedure
A slurry of 3-((3-iodo-4-nitro-1H-indazol-1-yl)methyl)benzonitrile (0.200 g, 0.495 mmol) and MeOH (10.0 mL) was cooled to 0° C., then Zn dust (0.162 g, 2.47 mmol) was added followed by saturated aqueous NH4Cl (10 mL). The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour, then warmed to ambient temperature and stirred overnight. The mixture was diluted with MeOH and filtered. The solid was washed with CH2Cl2 and MeOH. To the filtrate was added saturated aqueous NH4OAc and the mixture was concentrated to remove bulk MeOH. The mixture was then extracted with EtOAc, and the combined organic extracts were washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (25 to 100% EtOAc/hexane) to afford 0.090 g (73%) of the desired product as an orange oil.
