To a solution of benzyl ((2S,3S)-1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-oxoazetidin-3-yl)carbamate (5.37 g, 13.41 mmol) and TEA (3.72 mL, 26.8 mmol) in DCM at 0° C. was added MsCl (1.15 mL, 14.75 mmol). After stirring at 0° C. for 1 h, it was diluted with water/DCM and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with DCM (2×) and the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude residue was taken up in toluene and concentrated (2×), affording the title compound as an off white solid. It was used as such in subsequent reactions.
