Reaction Steps

A mixture of 3-benzyloxy-phthalic acid dimethyl ester (1.64 g, 5.50 mmol) and 3N NaOH (50 mL) in ethanol (100 mL) was heated to reflux for 1 h and cooled to room temperature. The solvent was removed under vacuum and the residue was dissolved in water (100 mL), washed with CH2Cl2 (2×100 mL) and acidified with 6N HCl to pH 1-2. The precipitate was filtered and washed with water (100 mL) to give 3-benzyloxy-phthalic acid as a white solid (1.10 g, 74% yield); 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 5.20 (s, 2H), 7.29-7.51 (m, 8H), 13.02 (br, 2H).
