Procedure
A mixture of 3-(1-naphthalen-2-yl-ethoxy)-phthalic acid dimethyl ester (0.9 g, 2.5 mmol) and 3N NaOH (50 mL) in ethanol (100 mL) was heated to reflux for 2 h. The mixture was cooled and the solvent was removed under vacuum. The residue was dissolved in water (100 mL) and washed with CH2Cl2 (3×100 mL), acidified (HCl), and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×75 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with water (3×75 mL), dried (MgSO4), and evaporated, providing 0.50 g of 3-(1-naphthalen-2-yl-ethoxy)-phthalic acid, in 60% yield; 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 1.60 (d, J=6.2 Hz, 3H), 5.79 (q, J=6.2 Hz, 1H), 7.21-7.31 (m, 2H), 7.38 (dd, J=7.1 Hz, J=1.3 Hz, 1H), 7.46-7.57 (m, 3H), 7.83-7.93 (m, 4H).
