Reaction Steps

To a solution of 3-(benzyloxy)aniline (5.00 g) in DMF (50% mL) were added sodium acetate (2.10 g) and ethyl bromoacetate (4.20 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hr. Water was added, and the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (4.80 g) as orange crystals.
