Dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (19 g, 15.90 mmol) was added to a suspension of 1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carbohydrazide (3.50 g, 19.88 mmol) in 1:1 toluene; methanol (60 mL) and refluxed overnight. The volatiles were evaporated in vacuo to afford crude compound which was triturated with 6% methanol in chloroform (10 mL), precipitated solid was filtered and dried under reduced pressure to afford 3.20 g (69.56%%) 1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid dimethylaminomethylene-hydrazide as brown solid.
