2,9-dimethoxytriphenylene (49.1 g, 0.170 mol) and pyridine hydrochloride (200 g, 1.70 mol) were placed in a 500 mL round-bottom flask equipped with a stir bar, reflux condenser, and a nitrogen inlet and heated at 220° C. for 90 minutes. The solution was cooled and water was added, resulting in the formation of a white precipitate, which was collected by vacuum filtration, washed with water, and dried in vacuo to yield 43.7 g (96%) of 2,9-dihydroxytriphenylene.
