Sodium borohydride (0.870 g, 23.0 mmol) was added to an ice-cooled stirred solution of ethyl(7-iodo-1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazin-4-yl)acetate (1.00 g, 2.87 mmol) in EtOH (30 mL), under N2. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h, and then it was quenched by water addition (10 ml). The solvent was evaporated to dryness and the residue dissolved in THF (30 ml)/brine (30 ml) and extracted with THF (3×30 mL). The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to dryness to give the title compound (0.878 g, 2.87 mmol, 100%) as a solid.
