A mixture of 3-{trans-4-[(6-nitrothieno[3,2-b]pyridin-7-yl)amino]cyclohexyl}propanenitrile (63 mg, 0.19 mmol) and 10% palladium on carbon (20 mg) in methanol (1 mL) was hydrogenated under balloon pressure of H2 at room temperature for 2 h. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to give the desired product (48 mg, 84%), which was used directly in the next step. LCMS calculated for C16H21N4S (M+H)+: m/z=301.1. Found: 301.1.
