Reaction Steps

10 g of a 10% b.w. solution of tetrahexylammonium hydroxide (2.7 mmole) in methanol was mixed with 1 g (11 mmoles) of dimethylcarbonate (DMC) to yield a clear, colorless solution. Titration in 2-propanol with aqueous HCl after 24 hours revealed an equivalence point at a lower pH for the blocked versus the unblocked form and indicated complete blocking to 0.26 meq methylcarbonate per g solution.
