A mixture of methyl 7-nitro-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indole-8-carboxylate (Intermediate 19, 0.160 g) and tin (II) chloride (0.520 g) in methanol (6 mL) and water (0.06 mL) was heated at 60° C. for 8 hours. The resultant mixture was cooled and diluted with DCM and filtered through Celite. The filtrate was washed with 1M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and brine, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give methyl 7-amino-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indole-8-carboxylate (0.100 g) as a brown solid.
