Methanesulfonyl chloride (0.176 g) was added to a solution of methyl 2-(3-hydroxypropyl)-5-nitro-1H-indole-4-carboxylate (Intermediate 21, 0.360 g) in pyridine (1 mL) and DCM (10 mL) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The mixture was diluted with DCM, washed with aqueous citric acid (5%), aqueous sodium bicarbonate and brine, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in toluene and evaporated to dryness, four times to give methyl 2-(3-methanesulfonyloxypropyl)-5-nitro-1H-indole-4-carboxylate (0.460 g) as an orange gum.
