Procedure

5-Methyl-1-nitroso-2-phenylindoline (0.8 g, 0.00336 mol) was dissolved in acetone (30 mL), and to this saturated ammonium chloride solution (4.4 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C., and zinc dust (1.31 g, 0.0201 mol) was added portionwise over 30 min. at 0° C. The reaction was stirred for 1 h at RT, and after completion of reaction (monitored by TLC), the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. Water (100 mL) was added and the mixture extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain product as a yellow colored oil (0.6 g).
