Procedure

A solution of (2R)-2-isobutylsuccinic acid (35 mg, 0.2 mmol) in acetyl chloride (1.2 ml) was heated at reflux under nitrogen for 2.2 hours then volatile components removed by distillation in vacuo to leave (3R)-3-isobutyldihydrofuran-2,5-dione as an oily residue which was used without further purification.
