Procedure
An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (10%, 21.1 mL) was added slowly to a solution of 2-methyl-but-2-enedial-1-O-methyl-oxime (5 g) in acetone (100 mL) at 0° C. After 2 hrs the mixture was neutralized with a saturated solution of ammonium chloride, extracted with ethyl acetate (3×80 mL), washed with water (100 mL), dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate and the solvent was evaporated yielding a yellow-orange solid (of formula V, R3 is methyl; 5.1 g).
