Procedure

A mixture of the benzyl 2-(5-bromo-4-methyl-2-thienyl)-2-methylpropanoate and sodium hydroxide (0.33 g, 8.3 mmol) in methanol (10 ml) and water (2.5 ml) was heated under reflux for 1 hour. The solvent was evaporated and the residue triturated with 1N hydrochloric acid and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, dried over magnesium sulfate and then evaporated to leave 2-(5-bromo-4-methyl-2-thienyl)-2-methylpropanoic acid as a yellow gum which was used in the next step without purification. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 2.09 (s, 6H), 2.13 (s, 3H), 6.69 (s, 1H).
