Procedure

The oxime from Step 1 (0.61 g, 1.7 mmol) and acetic anhydride (6 mL) were stirred at 140 ° C. for 6.3 hours. The reaction was poured into water, extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with saturated NaHCO3, brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo to give a brown oil (1.09 g). The oil was purified by flash chromatography (10:1; hexanes: ethyl acetate) yielding upon concentration the title compound as a white solid (0.51 g, 88%): mp 114.6–115.6° C. 1H NMR (CDCl3/300 MHz) 7.65 (s, 1H), 7.53 (d, 1H, J=2.4 Hz), 7.44 (d, 1H, J=2.4 Hz), 5.87 (q, 1H, J=6.4 Hz), 4.36 (m, 2H), 1.37 (t, 3H, J=6.5 Hz).
