To a solution of 2-[4-(2-ethyl-5,7-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-3-yl)phenyl]ethanol (step 6, 2.2 g, 7.4 mmol) in toluene (40 mL) was added thionyl chloride (2.0 mL, 23.6 mmol), and the resulting mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 3 h. The volatile components were removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (gradient elution from 2:1 to 1:1) to afford 2.1 g (90%) of the title compound as white solids: 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.41 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 7.35 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 6.90 (1H, s), 3.78 (2H, t, J=7.4 Hz), 3.15 (2H, t, J=7.4 Hz), 2.83 (2H, q, J=7.6 Hz), 2.71 (3H, s), 2.54 (3H, s), 1.28 (3H, t, J=7.6 Hz).
