To a solution of 4,6-dimethyl-2-(4-{2-[({[(4-methylphenyl)sulfonyl]amino}carbonyl)amino]ethyl}anilino)-3-nitropyridine (step 3, 11.4 g, 23.6 mmol) in methanol (250 mL) was added 10% Pd—C (2.0 g). The resulting mixture was stirred under the medium pressure of hydrogen (4.0 kgf/cm2) for 4 h. The catalyst was removed by filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to afford 9.0 g (85%) of the title compound as off white solids.
