26.0 g of 2-chloro-3-hydroxy-p-anisaldehyde are dissolved in 400 ml of acetic anhydride and 5 ml of pyridine. The solution is stirred at 80° for 8 hours, subsequently evaporated, the residue is partitioned between ice-water and methylene chloride, the organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate, evaporated and the residue is recrystallized from methylene chloride/petroleum ether. There is obtained 2-chloro-3-formyl-6-methoxyphenyl acetate of m.p. 48°-50°.
