Reaction Steps
A mixture of 0.30 g (0.0006 moles) of the product obtained in Step D, 0.36 g (0.012 moles) of paraformaldehyde, 50 mg of p-toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate and 30 mL of acetonitrile was refluxed for 1 hour. The resulting mixture was partitioned between CH2Cl2 and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and the aqueous layer was extracted twice with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give an oil that was chromatographed on silica gel using 4:1 hexanes-ethyl acetate to give 0.23 g of an oil that solidified on standing, melting point, 213°-214° C.
