A mixture of dimethyl α,α'-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)adipate (11.0 g, 21.7 mmoles), potassium hydroxide (13.0 g, 202 mmoles), water (163 ml), and ethanol (65 ml) was heated at 90° in a nitrogen atmosphere for 3 hours. After cooling the clear solution was added slowly to 250 ml of 1N hydrochloric acid with vigorous stirring. The slurry was stirred and warmed to 50° for several minutes. After cooling in an ice bath the solid was filtered, washed with water (4 times) and dried to give 10.07 g (97%) of α,α'-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)adipic acid, m.p. 226°-233°. NMR (DMSO-d6) indicates a 9:1 mixture of meso and racemic isomers.
