To a solution of 13.31 g (47 mmol) 1-[4-[(methylsulfonyl)amino]benzoyl]piperazine in 50 mL methanol add 6.4 mL (47 mmol) 1,2-epoxy-3-phenoxypropane. Stir the reaction mixture at roomtemperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. Follow the progress of the reaction by thin-layer chromatography on silica gel (methylene chloride: MeOH, 9:1). When the reaction is complete, remove the solvents in vacuo toobtain an oil. Dissolve the oil in ethanol with one equivalent of H3PO4 and remove the solvents to obtain the title compound.
