12 g of E-2-amino-4-methyl-5-phosphono-3-pentenoic acid ethyl ester are stirred under reflux in 70 ml of water for 19 hours. The reaction mixture is slowly cooled to room temperature, stirred in an ice bath for one hour,filtered and washed with cold water. In this manner there is obtained E-2-amino-4-methyl-5-phosphono-3-pentenoic acid in the form of the monohydrate, m.p. 163° (decomp.).
