Procedure
A solution of 4-chloro-3-chloroethyl-2-methylquinoline hydrochloride (1.28 g, 4,6 mmol) and 4-hydroxy-2-methylaniline (1.13 g. 9.2 mmol) in n-butanol(20 ml) was heated at reflux under a nitrogen atmosphere for 20 hours, thenevaporated. Chromatography (silica gel, 5-7% methanolic ammonia in dichloromethane) and recrystallisation from aqueous methanol gave 1-(4-hydroxy2-methylphenyl)-4-methyl-2,3-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-c]quinoline (0.16 g), m.p. 315°-318°.
