Sodium methoxide (0.68 g, 12.6 mmol) was added to a solution of 3-{[6-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-2-naphthyl]sulfonyl}propanenitrile (Step 2, 4.04 g, 11.3 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran/methanol (1:1, 120 mL) and stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was diluted with diethyl ether (120 mL) and stirred for 30 minutes. The solid precipitate was collected by filtration to give sodium 6-(2,4-difluorophenyl)naphthalene-2-sulfinate (3.58 g). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD) δ 8.14 (1H, s), 8.03-7.97 (3H, m), 7.84 (1H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 7.66 (2H, dd, J=8.6, 20.2 Hz), 7.10-7.08 (2H, m).
